  1. Sorry but the bad start is all yours. Take responsibility for your actions. Very wise of you! Actions speak louder than words. Stop talking shit and go read ucapps and the wiki. It is not a "crime" to be unfamiliar with the midibox framework. We don't expect you to be psychic, it's ridiculous to imply such a thing. It is a "crime" to expect everyone else to explain it to you here when it's already been explained in detail on ucapps.de and the wiki and the forum. It is an even greater "crime" to talk shit about them when they direct you to those explanations. Yes, and we won't allow you to have fun at our expense. You should start by reading the already existing communications - ucapps, the forum and the wiki. If you want to better ask the question, the simple way to do it, is to try and see if the question has already been answered. If it has, you don't need to ask at all.
  2. Just for the record, because it seems some people have taken the unimportant parts of phil's post a little too seriously, and completely ignored the majority of it which is quite important.... I don't ban people. If a ban happens, it's by community decision - but that's extremely unlikely, generally you would need to be a grade-A asshole to earn such treatment in return. We make all efforts to find an amicable way to deal with any issues that might arise. Nobody here wants to ban anyone and we won't do it unless you force us to. That said..... Let's make this simpler to understand. Let's pretend the forum is just three people, TK, Bob and Fred. Scenario A TK makes a midibox, and he shares his design with the world. Bob decides he wants to build one too. Being a hard working person he makes as much effort as he can, but there are a few things he needs help with, so he asks the forum. TK helps Bob out and the box is in progress again. Bob spreads his knowledge around by updating the wiki for future midiboxers, and keeps building his midibox. In the meantime, TK is working on a cool new app. Bob is looking forward to building that new toy when it is released. Now along comes Fred. being a hard working person he makes as much effort as he can, including reading Bob's wiki pages, but there are a few things he needs help with, so he asks the forum. TK is writing the cool new app, and Bob realises this, so he takes a little time out of his own build, to help Fred. What a generous guy. Fred spreads his knowledge around by updating Bob's wiki pages for future midiboxers, and keeps building his midibox. A short time later, Bob and then Fred finish their midiboxes. At the same time, TK finishes his cool new app. The whole scenario repeats, and there are cool new apps and completed midiboxes everywhere. They all live happily ever after. Scenario B TK makes a midibox, and he shares his design with the world. Now along comes Fred. being a selfish lazy bugger, he makes little to no effort, doesn't read TK's webpages or Bob's wiki pages, and goes direct to asking the forum. TK is writing the cool new app, and Bob realises this, so he takes a little time out of his own build, to help Fred. What a generous guy. Sadly, because Fred has been lazy, he has *lots* of questions. Bob cannot commit as much time to helping, as Fred needs to get so many answers. This means that TK needs to take some time to help Fred too. Now, Bob has not finished his app yet, because he was busy helping Fred. Likewise, TK has not finished the new app, because he was busy helping Fred. Fred is progressing well. He doesn't bother to update the wiki with the info he learned, and because of this, future midiboxers will have a harder time and need to ask more questions. The whole scenario repeats, there are no new midiboxes, and noone ever finishes their own, because they are always helping someone else. ...... The end. Look, making a midibox takes time and effort. That is unavoidable - as much as we'd like them to appear by magic, that ain't gonna happen. You have a choice: You can make that effort yourself, or you can offload it onto the people around you. If you offload it, you are choosing to take something (their midibox) away from those people. The choice is yours, but if you choose to be a lazy bugger who wants to take way everyone else's midibox because you want one.... You can expect them to respond in a negative manner. You just took away their midibox, what do you expect, a red-carpet welcome? They might just ignore you when you ask questions (who knows, maybe you'll get desperate and actually read the webpages!). If you're new, they might tell you to go read the webpages, in the assumption that you didn't realise that it was up to you. Otherwise, you can choose to make an effort for yourself, and not only can you have a midibox, but you can ensure that everyone else can have one too. If you've made that effort, it will be obvious, and the people around you will be happy to take a little time out of their own projects to help you if you have any questions. Because you've made the initial effort, they won't have to help much, so it's no big inconvenience. The choice is yours. Don't blame others for the consequences of your decision. Edit: Diced out a bad word
  3. Heheh, I almost removed it until I realised it was an otherwise-unanswered question.... but wow, what a bump ;)
  4. Okay so it's a word ending with -us or -o or -i then.... we're getting there :D OMG, I nearly choked. Gold. I will be chuckling at that for weeks.
  5. Totally misunderstood! I mentioned the synths because you said that fluid was'nt accepting CC's, Right, so you want an *audio* sequencer then! I hear "sequencer" and think "midi sequencer". That's because back in the day the audio 'sequencers' were called 'multitrackers' (not to be confused with trackers as in sequencing samples with hex, but as in, 'multi-track audio editors'). After a time the midi sequencers took on audio multitracker features, but the name stuck - Cakewalk Pro Audio, Cubase Audio, etc. So really when you say sequencer, it means midi by default. This is similar to the "DAW" thing where once a DAW was a hardware+software unit (DAWorkstation - hardware! A bunch of bits on disk is not a workstation...) but these days dudes call audio+midi sequencers a 'DAW'(and manufacturers themselves of course, they have to tell people what they're selling and if dudes want a 'DAW' they better be selling a 'DAW' heh), which kinda leaves the name for the whole unit an unfilled gap... Anyway enough history lesson, we're gettin too old for this sh*t ;) I was trying to figure out what you meant when you said "A sequencer. It does not take any look at the MIDI events itself"... I was like....uhmm.... that's what sequencers do... maybe you're running your web browser by mistake? hehehe I'm clueless in the audio seq/multitrack software field.... Sorry dude... Hope you'll keep us posted! When I said fluxus I was thinking Pawfal: http://www.pawfal.org/index.php?page=PawfalProjects They have some cool toys but I don't think they're relevant to you now...
  6. Thanks guys. I'm pretty familiar with what it all means, just trying to pin down the name.. I can't get it out of my head that there is a more formal term than upper/lower.... [img width=200]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sF7GLOjfSVM/RzDKdZ39zBI/AAAAAAAAABo/I3-vR8iJ0Xw/s400/IMG_0179.JPG ....Maybe not!
  7. Uhm... maybe I'm being daft, maybe it's just my memory failing as usual... But I cannot remember what the names of the top and bottom numbers in a time signature are... I mean as in, in a fraction, you have numerator and denominator... in a time sig, you have (the top one) and (the bottom one)... Anyone know the correct terms for those? Thanks! Oh look, there's a little castle in my tank.... Oh look, there's a little castle in my tank.... Oh look, there's a little castle in my tank....
  8. Good work! And thanks for sharing the answer! :)
  9. Bingo. Thanks for adding the link and clearing that up guys.
  10. seq24? MuSE (excellent linear MIDI seq, I don't know of any better)? ZynAddSubFX? AMSynth? Alsa Modular Synth? Maybe look to fluxus, their stuff ain't pretty but its fast and powerful.... Uhm?..............
  11. I just saw this guy interviewed on TV here, on http://www.abc.net.au/tv/sundayarts/ You can download the ep if you like (hooray for teh interw3bz) His name is Gideon Obarzanek, and he's a choreographer among other things apparently. having just done a bit of a search for him, I've actually heard of some of his work, seems he's getting the deserved cred, so dance fans will probably be reading this saying "sheesh, stryd, get with the times" ;) Anyway aside from the glitchy music, the reason I think his work will interest a lot of you is the tech used. Fricken aaawesome stuff. Cop a couple of videos: This the 'what it is' Yeh, I told ya awesome.... Realtime and all.... and hey if that don't get ya, you're a poor excuse for a geek, but watch it anyway, cause dancers are hot to death. (joking! no flames, please!(they are though!)) Here's a bit more viewing minus the overdub; He's far from a one-trick pony though, so if you like your dance, give him a google! Edit sorry, fixed link!
  12. SmashTV PICs recently (at least since he stocked 4685s) have MIOS on them too (as well as the bootloader).... Which hints at a wiring problem. You should see "Ready."
  13. I think you've taken our collective picky-ness a bit too seriously ;) You're already good enough. We're being picky, we'd give you advice on how to improve, unless it was already 'perfect' - and I don't know anyone who can solder 'perfect', myself included ;)
  14. Heya pablop :) This is not a MIdibox User Project so I've moved it, but definitely not pissed off :D We only get pissy if people don't bother to read the stickies, and that's not you ;) So, I've moved it to misc... but somehow, misc seems not 'worthy'... I dunno quite where to put this one, but I am open to suggestions from you or anyone else as to where to put it (advice appreciated). As for distribution and "free" software, that's a can of worms. Being as how the VB runtimes are preinstalled on all Windows versions (since 98se IIRC) you probably don't need to include them in your distribution, but you may choose to do so. I don't know about licensing for the MIDI libs you've used, so you'll need to check that out, but generally speaking, that and your GUI widget OCX should be included in your distribution (PDW might be the tool for this?) Now, as for whether it can be released as "free", that's the really wormy part. Yes, the whole collection of components that make up your tool can be released as freeware. You'll have to see what MS's licensing is (this week hehehe.... ), but if things haven't changed, you can't actually host the runtimes on your site, but have to link users to the MS website to get them, should they be required. Yes, your application itself, including your OCX, can be released as freeware. By 'freeware', I mean, free of charge - not 'libre'. Whether it can be released as libre software is a matter of some discussion. Generally speaking most people would agree that your app can be released as libre, but some would say that it can not, as it relies upon non-libre components (VB runtimes and maybe the Mabry IO). Personally, I'd say: Don't worry about whether it's "free" or not. Just release it as you see fit.
  15. Was supporting jooks, not accusing you ;) You're right to be picky...
  16. That's a bad habit you're developing there ;)
  17. If you have a temperature controlled iron, turn it up a touch, and go a bit faster. You'll avoid those cold-ish joints. (they're not that bad anyway)
  18. 7 Regions wouldn't allow you to select multiple waveforms....
  19. Thanks so much for taking the time to share it with us, after all this time. Worth the wait :) Heh, 16F.... pre-mios... oldskool! :D Dig the gold panel... looks like high-end 70's hifi gear!
  20. Heheh that's a common mistake.... I made it myself! :D I like to order my data well too, but a lot of these kind of tools have issues with long file names. That is why make (which is the correct version as are all the other tools) can't find sh.... And it's definitely why the quickstart page says "Install using the defaults." :D LOL (don't sweat it, I'm just having fun w/ you) Unfortunately, and yes it is ugly and disorganised and also annoyed me, it may have to go in the root with a short file name path (no spaces). If you feel like experimenting, you may like to try converting your paths in PATh and the MIOS vars, to short fie names, eg: c:\Program Files\msys\1.0\bin -> c:\Progra~1\msys\1.0\bin etc. To be honest, I would recommend against it.... Using long file names (even faking the short one) turned out to be a lot of hassle for me. New versions of the tools can (and did) mysteriously break... It's just not worth it. If your OCD is just killing you, maybe make a c:/dev directory and put it all in there or something :/ sorry for the bad news! Edit: beaten. And ditch the quotes in your path!
  21. Did you install msys to the default location? make and sh should be in the same location (C:/msys/1.0/bin). Obviously, make is running, so it is found in the path. but sh not? that is strange. I am wondering if you've changed the default installation location to somewhere special (bad), and then copy/pasted the command to copy the new make version to the correct location (good), and copy/pasted the PATH from the wiki which points to that location (good). This would allow make to run, but not much else ;) Also perhaps you are actually successfully running some other copy of make from your HDD. If you pasted the path from the wiki that would be unlikely. A few tests, which will give us more insight: Go 'start...run...' and type "cmd" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Type in each of these commands and hit enter after each one, please copy and paste the results into a reply Edit: and i do mean, copy and paste, please don't type it! If you don't know how to copy/paste in a command prompt, google 'dos quickedit' (without the quotes)) sh --version make --version sed --version sdcc --version set MIOS PATH (You can edit the output from PATH if you are really sensitive about it, but it shouldn't be anything secret I would think, and it's best to leave it exactly as-is, to avoid errors) Good luck!
  22. Beware brightness loss. If you filter all but the red light out of a blue lcd... that ain't much light....Depends on lcd etc etc blah blah....
  23. I've put a lot of work into it so far, and all based on ubuntu studio... I think it's a bit too late to try other distros now. Fortunately I've managed to find various packages for the later versions of the tools we need, and while I wait for a couple of things to reach completion, I want to start filling out the PPA with those packages. After that I'll make up metapackages and package up the stragglers, and it'll be ready to roll :)
