I may have made a booboo with my mbfm. :-[ I recently posted about a garbled sound coming out of my opl3 audio out. Well I messed up. I remember wiring my 12v power supply wrong while the core board connected to opl3 5v were also connected to the same power strip as the 12v supply. So when I turned on the power strip my midibox came on and then shut off very quick because the power strip's fuse blew. So I tested my core and it still uploads programs but after that I haven't got the opl3 audio to come out. Should I end up replacing the ymf262 ,yac512s and tl074s? How can I check these parts properly? Would the mbfm interconnections test be able to verify this? Regards, echo

MBFM running test tone and I am not getting tone at audio #4
Echopraxia replied to Echopraxia's topic in MIDIbox FM
Well I tried the correct pic 18f452 loaded with the test tone app and I still get a very faint hum and No test tone. Not even the garbled sound that I posted previously. I am fearing that now there may be something damaged or I soldered wrong pads on the underside of the core pic pins. Can some one point me in the right direction. Should I try 4 bit mode lcd? Would I wire the lcd with half as many pins or something to free up the core's pins for j2 of opl3? Can you guys take a look at the 3rd picture down that shows the whole core connected to the opl3 and tell me if I soldered the wires to the correct orientation. And then the last picture with the crystal. I couldn't understand the schem for the crystal and which one is the hot pin. There is small line on the crystal at the bottom left of the last picture. I assumed this was the hot pin. Any suggestions as where to check for certain voltages? Regards, echo -

I have the right pic. I should try it at this point. There is solder on all of the pads for sure. Just some of the pads are not completely drenched in it. how do you check for continuity? -

Alright. I don't get the garbled audio sound anymore but now I don't get any audio using the test tone app. >:( I could still hear a ground hum coming from the audio jack. So I will check my wiring from opl3 to underside of core's pic again but I think its right. Can maybe the audio not attached to the power supply ground cause no audio? I thought audio would still come out but just have extra hum. Are there any pic pins I should check voltages on? Will post pictures of underside of core later tonight. regards, echo -
8) Thanks for helping me understand it better. The phrase mode sounds like it already has everything I ever wanted and a whole lot more:D sincerely, echo

Thats what I forgot to do before I started posting all these assumptions:P I just got a nifty little macro cam to take close ups to document my MBFM mission so others can see what to do and what not to do. Regards, echo -
I will have to wait to see how it works. It looks like all these different presets are on a dedicated menu page that shows on the LCDs using 1-16gp buttons correct? I was referring to being able to change a pattern while doing these tempo switches Regards, echo

That looks pretty good there ;) Ramps could be adjustable down to ms and up to ???. I wish I had a mac right now to test. That idea was kinda last minute really. Is "fire preset" some trigger function? I still think having a dedicated button to "capture the original tempo" then whip it back instantly to the first measure (no delay) sounds like great live tweaking to me. I would believe that when you press -or- press and hold the button, the seq could store the current tempo. Then either release the button or press again to have your tempo return to the stored value. Would be good for quick breakdowns and sequencing trips Regards, echo

I just remembered I have not soldered j2 of opl3 to the core's pic pins underside directly yet. This is how to solder correct? God I am a dumbass sometimes :( Will post results. Regards echo -

Well I loaded the mbfm hex onto the core and I still get the same consistent sound. I assume the quietness is from the unproper grounding @ out_1 of the opl3 board and the problem might be with the pic, crystal or chips. The Tl074s I believe are fine. I didn't install them untill I was getting +12v at pin 4+11. If I soldered the crystal the wrong way can it damage the unit or the crystal? My chips seem to have good solder joints but maybe I need to recheck with magnifier. I am going to get a little macro cam for a Mother's Day gift and take some close-ups of my board :P Its for the kids honey! I swear! 8) Please see original post for attached sound file. One other thing to mention was that I blew a fuse on my power strip when reverse wiring my +12v,-12v power supply to the power strip :o Of course I stupidly had the core plugged into the same power strip and I may have had the 5v running to the opl3 board. My core module still seems to work fine. I just thought I might point that out. Next time when I connect a power supply to wall I should test the cable end thats coming out of the wall first. :) -

Thanks just figured out how to attach. :P please see original post. -
interactive song step recording sounds interesting TK. I have a new request for a tempo mod to change tempo and revert back to 1st tempo. Say you are playing at 80 bpm, you can designate a f1-4 button to press and hold while changing the tempo. Then when you release the f button your tempo jumps back to 80 bpm. To add to this, when releasing the f button, the song/all patterns start from their begining. Or tap f button to set original tempo then press again to revert back to that tempo on the beat so you can tweak filters and crap at the same time. This is sounding better as I type :D I think this could be very useful for live slowdown/break of a track and when you release the button get right back into it no BS. it should only be for the master tempo to control all tracks to keep it simple. This would really add to the stuttering functions talked previously. regards, echo P.S maybe even be able to adjust the time/length the tempo takes to speed back up/down when releasing f button. yes or no? Maybe add menu tempo speed ramp setting 1-16 user defined :D When you press original f button then press 1-16 gp the tempo can ramp back up/down at different speeds to give your track some slapback. The thing I can think of that would get in the way of this is selecting other patterns while using f button. while your slowing down tempo you would probably change patterns to go into a new song so using 1-16 doesn't seem feasible. This whole paragraph is being thought up as I type so forgive my thought process.

MBFM running test tone and I am not getting tone at audio #4

Hey everybody. I recent got audio out of my MBFM the first time and I was just hooking it up for testing purposes and got quiet audio of a garble sound. I want to know if this is normal sound. Now before you come to conclusions. I have a pic 18f4620 in there right now which I still need to swap out and I ran my audio jack to the ground and the audio leads (i.e out_1) directly on the opl3 board unlike what the schem suggests. Can these two issues change things dramatically? Attached is the sound on a mp3 file. MBFM continuous audio coming out.mp3 MBFM continuous audio coming out.mp3 -
Hello. I started soldereding my OPL3 board and of course right when I got started soldering two of the gold contact pads came right off. I never had this problem with soldering my core, dins, dout, iic, bankstick ect. Should I go a buy a gold contact pen a draw then back in? Also the weird thing is the two pads that came off I think might go to ground (the dark green area on smash's board). Correct me if I am wrong on this Picture didn't load right will post pic of whcih pins later. Looking at smash's solder side picture on the opl3 big single chip top row 2nd from the right and 4th from the left. Can these be left not soldered. I tried scratching off some of the board where the pads were but it seems like there is nothing the solder can latch onto.

Would be good possibly for wilbas bulk run. ;)

Thanks for confirm that for me lucem. I will probably be back with more questions when my box and 24 leds are sitting in front of me.

On the DIN schem the 4 row buttons for the led matrix are going into just one d-input/header. I understand that it is to save from adding a whole extra DINX module but I see there is a part number for diodes on the schem aswell. I can't say I have done proper testing of how this works and I don't have a breadboard tester. Can someone throw me in the right direction for some typical construction? I also have a question about the DOUT module schem with 4 rows of leds anodes connecting to 4 d-inputs/headers which are also occupied by the DIN's wiring aswell. Does the DIN get wired directly to the DOUT and the buttons connected to the DOUT? And do the leds get connected to the same inputs as the row buttons do? I am not sure if I am understanding the correct way to do this. Regards, echo

Noisy as in noisy audio signal or a noisy power brick?
-
How about this one? http://www.futurlec.com/Mini_Power_Dual_12V.shtml It says on the pcb +5 and -5 aswell only $10 I think you have to still get a 14VDC wall wart correct? (to do it the easy way that is)

Hey y'all I found this little thing and just wanted to get some comments going. http://tomscarff.110mb.com/infrared_6x2CC_midi/infrared_midi.htm I don't like the fact that it only does certain CC numbers 48 - 61. Can all MB applications change the CC command for any parameter? I.E change LFO CC to another CC number to use this sensor to control it?

Thanks for the tips. I tried jb weld last night using the 50/50 ratio and I was not very excited with the results. I think I might try it again with more of the resin compund like 70/30 ratio after this coat cures.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try unmixed jb weld and then try mixed jb weld.
