Nick I have three questions: For the sake of clarity what is your relation to Gadget Gangster? Are you sure your developers are OK with you spamvertising their work this way? Is this an informal invitation for me to use your forum to promote my store? SmashTV

WTF I can’t transfer music from my iPod to new computer?
smashtv replied to bhc303's topic in Miscellaneous
Absolutely....I should have chosen my words a bit more carefully. It's crazy that this does not just work like expected. Please don't see my remarks as bitey towards you at all. I definitely didnt want to imply that you should 'take it outside' etc. with the bash x/y statement, was just trying to head off the usual holy war when I used the words mac and vista together in the next sentence. ;) It seems DRM only causes problems for legal media users and has zero effect on the availability of bootleg copies. I guess that somehow makes sense to an industry that's willing to sue it's customer base (or settle out of court for $n thousand dollars) as a source of income. Venting is good! ;) Best regards SmashTV -
WTF I can’t transfer music from my iPod to new computer?
smashtv replied to bhc303's topic in Miscellaneous
Heya *! Wow if you guys are going to throw the hate, please make sure you aim it in the right direction..... No you own the iPod and the computer, but according to the various recording industry associations, you are only renting the music.....and they would prefer that you buy re-rent it for every new format it's released on, and also buy rent a copy for every device you might possibly play it on. The rules about how/what you can copy from one device to another are set by these media cartels, not Apple, not Microsoft. We are talking about groups of lawyered-up profiteers armed with a majority of the money you have ever spent on music, whipping a dead business model for all they can get out of it. You will find the same if not much worse DRM issues with any media device that has been blessed by the rights holders. Ever tried to "squirt" (their word not mine!) a hit song from Sony or Universal on a Zune back when they still had that feature? Where I live they have bought so much legislation that my tax dollars are being used to prosecute file sharers in criminal court, while just about every other industry has to handle copyright infringement problems in civil court and on their own dime (as it should be). It's easy to bash y if you are a x owner and vice-versa, but there are other forums on the net dedicated to that. :) Considering how many free options there are on the mac side to do this, I have to wonder if there are also free tools for Vista that simply have worse search engine rank than the crippleware anklebiters. The last time I had a look at the process, for itunes store bought tracks (or anything DRM locked to your itunes account) you simply chose "Authorize Computer" from the itunes menu and every track bought from that account can be pulled for free to the new machine. Then for the DRM free and non-store tracks (or tracks you want to convert to DRM free) give Songbird a try. It's free (mozilla project) and cross platform. It is dressed like a media player/file manager, but it also has two way itunes library import and export. Run it on the old machine, import itunes library into songbird, transfer the songbird library to the new laptop, and export it to the new machine's itunes library (if you are staying with itunes). No need to fight with an ipod when all you need is a lan connection or usb key/sneaker net. :) Another thing to consider to avoid future DRM mess is alternative firmware for your player.....Rockbox and some other free firmware packages put the controls back in your hands. A few more photos (click to enlarge) The first is a shot Nils took showing the size of the STM chip, the rest are shots of the pinbed I built for programming and testing the boards. Back to the kit mill with me! Best regards SmashTV

Hi dubstructor, Sorry to hear this is giving you problems! You can.....I am quite procedural about a lot of things, especially handling/writing the PICs. I actually saw yours give the correct upload request via MIDI and display the "ready." message on an LCD with my own eyes. Simply put no PIC chip ever meets the cut shipping tube without firing it up on a modified Core I have here to be sure it gives the correct behavior. My guess (considering the failed loopback test) is there is an interface or driver issue, something that won't pass a simple loopback just won't be able to do a sysex upload. Back to the kit mill! Hi Sparx! Take a look at http://www.t2retail.co.uk/.....they came up after Tandy (RS parent company) folded in the UK, and last I checked they stocked almost everything RS for UK sale. Hopefully they have whatever it is you are looking for and your quest just got easier! Best regards SmashTV

Hi Cerebral, Sorry this thing is giving you troubles. This looks like a faulty bridge rec but I want to approach it with caution, having seen many bridge recs play the role of canary in the mine during my years as a tech. This is also the first and only reported failure out of a large lot of bridge recs, with many (hundreds) out there known working. Currently I pull four per hundred as samples to test, obviously that ratio will change......I spend way too much time testing PICs and optos before they ship to let something as simple as a bridge cause a build problem. :) Please check your private messages and we'll move forward from there. Let's look up some rate quotes for USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. I know it looks insane with the second to lowest cost service costing 3x the lowest cost, so please verify them yourself if you don't believe me. I know all of the couriers offer lower rates for higher volume shipping, but after talking to sales reps from each of these companies I don't ship enough per month to qualify for discounts. For this example I pulled quotes for both Belgium and Netherlands as the destination, and the price is the same for both countries with all couriers/service levels shown below. Parcel specs: 1lb weight, 9x12x4 inch box, $150 USD declared value. US to Belgium or Netherlands: $30.50 - USPS Express $98.96 - FedEx International Economy $104.11 - FedEx International Priority $104.41 - UPS Worldwide Expedited $109.56 - UPS Worldwide Saver $117.04 - DHL Worldwide Priority Express Some quote details: FedEx International Economy: Base Rate - 77.45 Declared Value - .60 Fuel Surcharge - 20.91 Total: $98.96 UPS Worldwide Expedited-zone 631: Base Rate - 77.45 USD Signature Required - 4.25 USD Declared Value - 1.80 USD Fuel Surcharge - 20.91 USD Total: 104.41 USD DHL Worldwide Priority Express: Base Rate - 79.10 Deliver Duty Paid (DDP) - 15.00 (DHL pays customs and collects from addressee on delivery) Fuel Surcharge - 22.94 Total: $117.04 To be clear, I'll ship anywhere via any courier that is available to me (TNT is not available as an outgoing service here)......but the order has to be prepaid via a non-reversible transaction (Western Union or US postal money order written in USD). Anyone know of a reliable parcel service anywhere near the USPS price? I'm all ears. Best regards SmashTV

Hi All! I signed on today and found that this thread had been infected with a nasty strain of the AGGRESSION_B virus, a pervasive strain that is so new that it is not recognized by most anti-virus software. This mean piece of malware is so evil that it will simultaneously ruin your mood by causing your friends to fight with each other, turn up the thermostat on your freezer (so your ice cream goes melty), and charge women's underwear to your credit card while trying to date your wife. Unfortunately the infection was so severe that all of the vowels in the entire thread were lost, but luckily I was able to save some of the rest of the letters. In order to prevent the spread of this nasty virus into other threads, all flamewars, border incursions, tiffs, dustups, slapfights, and full on melee's should be confined to the chat, where we have provided a boxing ring named alt.soldering.emo for your convenience. Hi Dave! It was perfect timing for me to test this so I did.... The 'project.hex' file from ucapps.de is working fine, I just programmed and tested a 16F88 loaded for IIc, with a fresh copy of the zip that I just downloaded. I don't know what burner you are using, but if JDM or one of the many other that PICPGM supports you should definitely give it a try. http://www.members.aon.at/electronics/pic/picpgm/index.html It seems much less like a maze/puzzle then the other burnware you mentioned. ;D Back to the kit mill with me!
