  1. Not so hard: in fact I'm vaguely working towards something similar. 1. Choose an analog crosspoint matrix IC from Analog Devices. Whichever one suits you for the number of ins, outs, etc. 2. Read all the documentation on that chip. 3. Design a control surface & display. 4. Design a PCB layout. 3. Write a MIOS app to spit the right digital signals into the chip and respond to the control surface/display. My impression is that the crosspoint matrix IC will handle multiple inputs to one output, one in to multiple outs, and any combinations thereof, whilst keeping levels nice. I'd suggest a LED matrix as part of your display, with 1 LED for each crosspoint. I have some other interface ideas I can show you if you like. You could perhaps choose the largest IC you could imagine using (and afford) and just implement the pins you'll need in the first version, saving the rest for later expansion. Have a look at the mod matrix on the SID control surface for a UI example. I think this is just a case of having balancing transformers on each in and out, and using a switching plug - ie a 6.5mm stereo headphone-type socket where a stereo jack make a balanced connection and a mono jack makes an unbalanced connection - or one of those combination XLR-jack plugs, which have an XLR socket with a 6.5mm mono socket in the middle. The XLR pins go to the balancing transformer and the 6.5mm socket pins bypass it. Or just two separate sockets. Whichever suits you better. Once it's in the IC it won't matter that it's not balanced. It might also be worth considering switchable +4db/-10db pads on the ins and outs.

  4. Found the roundup I was thinking of: it only covers drum sequencers though, and not all of them have MIDI. There's also a review of Dr T's Algorhythmic Composer on this page, and mention of a couple more here. (Dr T's Keyboard Controlled Sequencer (KCS) and Master Composer). Also the Kawasaki MIDI Work Station inc download link From poking around it looks as if the Prophet64 would rock if only it could output MIDI. I found this download site for non-game C64 software; under the Sound tab there are a good few apps to look at. Here's some more. Names I've seen crop up include Passport, Datel, SCI (Sequential Circuits) as well as the previously mentioned Moog. These are names of companies that made MIDI interfaces - no idea what their respective softwares were called.

Return is pretty much the same as another input channel I guess. Leaving out the pre/post switch would make it a lot simpler. I suppose what I am talking about here is pretty much another master bus.

However: (also from that thread) Still, if you could find (or make :) ) other software that was compatible, it would pretty much rock.

  9. Superb work lyle. Just a couple of quick questions: Can the channel board be configured as 4 mono inputs? What would be involved in providing FX sends and returns? Thanks for your hard work so far - the design looks very clean.

  12. One for the LCD gurus. Is the following possible: I want to re-define all the alphabetical characters in a 16x4 LCD so that they display sideways. ie instead of using it as 4 rows of 16 characters, I want to turn it on its side and use it as 16 rows of 4 characters. I assume that this means creating a custom font. The LCDs won't be addressed often, or used in a time-critical way, so it's not important that they be HD44780 types, as long as they are supported in MIOS. Or am I going to end up using a GLCD?

  14. Well done on the DR110 hack. Bad luck on missing out on the SX64. I've got a thing for luggables, and IMHO they're easily the best of breed aesthetically. I'd love even a non-functioning SX64 for a case mod.

  17. Hmm, Freescale/QiX board looks nice ... 8 channels of audio IO... can't figure out what the CPU on it is though. Being Freescale I assume it's a 68k or PPC derivative, but can anyone give a definitive answer?
  18. Very nice. I like the retro tape selector buttons at the bottom especially. You could always drill out the bottom of some valves and stick flickering LEDs in them. Hey it's good enough for Behringer and Korg ...
