nope, not stuffing the boards shouldn't change anything. you could start with checking where the problem is, eg disconnecting the boards and check the resistance between 5V and gnd. seems like a short somewhere. if a board is ok you could connect it again (one board at a time) and see if everything stays alright. on the lcd there's not much to solder, so you could probably spot a short visually very easy, if there is one. edit: maybe first make sure the lcd works, then the individual dins and douts. if these are alright maybe there's something wrong with the cs wiring

welcome! basically there are 3 choices: -build your SID synth the modular way: core(s), sid module(s), DIN, DOUT. how many you need depends on how big a project you like to build (minmal or full control surface) for example the one you linked to is TK's MBsid, made with individual modules, for exactly this setup there's even a plug & play firmware available. sids can be from 1 up to 8. -MB6582, 8fold SID, actually the same as the one above but all you need on 2 big boards with minimal wiring. recommended if you like the big one. there are building guides in the WIKI and all kinds of info here on the forum about this (search) -sammichSID: all in one, ABSOLUTE newbie friendly solution also incl. case for 1-2 sids, that's 2 stackable boards. also with great documentation and all info available. for soulutions 1 and 2 are parts kits available, for the sammichSID the best way would be to PM Wilba about it, he's doing bulk orders for this one now and then here's the sellers: http://www.avishowtech.com/ http://www.mikes-elektronikseite.de/

yeah i think so! i've only had it running in stereo with 6582As and also 8580 so far and it sounds awesome already. i think the step to 4x stereo will have a huge effect.

yeah i'm definitely in for the matrix board. we've been talking about that in your thread some time ago. my plan now is to complete my MB6582 with 6582A sids and also making a full CS for a little stereo version with 6581 R4AR sids, which sound different to the regular 6581 i found (but following TK's standard wiring from the pdf's) i'll keep those stock. and once they're running i'll make one 6582 with a custom control surface and 6581 with SSM filters and vcas. so this will be more advanced in different regards. things to learn.... i'll have a look at your wiki page and write myself down on your list then.

yeah i always wanted to do my own CS too. result: 2+ years without MB6582 but today i got back to reason and ordered boards from smashTV!!! but i'm still planning to make a custom surface in the future too, once i get figured out the matrix!

just to add some info: you can always mix encoders and digital switches on one DIN board, you just need to follow the appropriate order. also you might have to make changes in your firmware setup file. what you can't mix obviously are switches or encoders with analog pots, that's all. while you're at it you could consider also getting a small bank stick pcb for 8 eeproms (you can get the board also from mike, not sure if they're listed in the shop though) pleas show some pics of the process, especially the HD jogwheels! edit: here's a link (as example for combination of switches and encoders), it's of the sequencer, but basically the same thing: http://ucapps.de/midibox_seq/mbseq_v3_din.pdf

have a look around, there are always new people coming in and don't feel like they have to meet any special requirements from the community's side. usually they ask how they can start a project, where to get parts from, where's the problem with their boards etc... usually sales clerks, at least good ones, notice when the point is reached when their time spent in senseless pitch efforts outweighs the gain they calculated.

no, because the two output voltages of the C64 psu are added to about 14V and the 7809 / 78L09 on the sid module regulates this down again.

man, i wanted to recommend having a look at Ray Wilson's site for some easy active mixer circuits, but i thought no, they'll likely need bipolar supply! doh! if you use seppoman filters and vca you'll need bipolar supply anyway!! so you could look over there, if you haven't already.

yep i'm planning 1 vca and 1 vcf per sid. thanks for explaining that. so i'll definitely need 4 Aout_NGs. i haven't yet tried the vca, that will be the next step now. also i'm considering taking a control surface board from smashTV and the original panel from JulianF to speed things up a bit. but the stereo sid with the seppoman filters sounds so good, i just have to do that with 6581. hard to imagine that 8x sound!

I'm gonna try it too as soon as i've hacked my sid together again (finally). also i must admit, i haven't done anything yet with the multi engine, except for testing that it works. so the discussion about the technical details in this thread is, embarassingly, a bit over my head. is there an easy way to explain, or would it rather be shut up and try ?

hehe i've taken care of the seppoman boards and parts of the SSMs already. just need 2 more Aout_NGs then. and other stuff too, of course. what i meant is J2 on the Aout_NG board. you connect the core to Aout_NG J1. while all other pins of J1 and J2 (Aout_NG) are connected, just the 4th pin of each go in the direction of the rest of the aout circuit, each on their appropriate side. so that's what lead me to the conclusion that both halves of the Aout_NG could receive their data from two different sources. i have the feeling that i'll get deeper into the system and how it functions slowly, step by step. but i hope i assume correctly that for example one SSM2164 quad VCA can have each of their quarters controlled by CVs source independent (from different Aout_NGs) maybe i should make a quick drawing how i meant it would work.... yeah and pricey, sure! but wth, it's worth it!

Jojjelito, so that means i can't share one Aout_NG for two cores..... i just took a look at the Aout board. couldn't just connect pin 4 of J2 to a second core? without studying the schematics right now it seems as if it were planned that way (visually). but if that's not possible it's still not that dramatic, as one can share each Aout-NG then for one dual VCF and half of a quad VCA (seppoman's of course). dang i have to RTFM !!

i probably do not have the best market overview, but the midibox platform already seems to be very efficient in terms of getting hardware to work and provide desired functionality, without push from the commerce 101. of course it all depends from skilled engineers who are able to "do things half asleep". so if you're able to develop, commercially produce and make a living of highly interesting products that's great! for example i am not that skilled, unfortunately. and if you like the community that much you could even design them compatible to midibox and declare them open source for diy. may seem as a smartass comment, but that's just your request from the exact opposite point of view.
