  1. yes. opposite mounting doesn't seem like a very good idea. EDIT: Yes, IF they add latency that degrades performance - that is not wanted :). Someone who has two interfaces that would like to do a stress test on em with a hub? Or is there any tech specs that can tell wether this is an issue?
  2. Oh, u didn't get urs yet. Cool, let me know when u get it, and I will get some too then :) Illy, I think it should be 19" case, but if that's just me, I will gladly see other designs too, what do u guys think? sine: The price hasn't actually been officially introduced yet, since things has been added to the prize over time. The way it looks now: 2x GM 5x5x5 PCBs 2x GM 5 Chip All the onboard components - that will exclude the midi jacks and LEDs I guess. Rosch is the one donating those components, so he will have to decide what is in and what is out of the component kit I guess :) So this is a pretty decent prize :). And yes :) hehe, if u need any more than the ones u got there (looks good btw) hehe just go for it :)
  3. has discovered baritone guitars. Will get one for sure!

  4. OK. I have an idea about the guidelines. Lets scrap em. Post whatever 19" case u are doing (very cool with two GM5x5x5 inside - but single ones are also welcome of COURSE :D) And let us just see what people can come up with :D Shuriken, that case looks like it is good quality - is it as sturdy as it looks too? If so, I'm getting a couple myself for this, and some other gear! HAPPY DESIGNING!
  5. My C64C chips have heatsinks in the original case. No fans though :P
  6. Hehe. Well, I'm safe there, as my name will NEVER EVER end up on a list of common names. My first and last name is both pretty uncommon. Most of them people with my last name is found in this area and are relatives of mine, or reltaives of my relatives - 3rd, 4th cousins and all that :P. My first name is also a relatively rare name, only 67 people have it (norwegian statistics agency website search). In addition I write my first name in an old way :P. And the combination of my first and last name is used by 3, 2, 1 or 0 persons (again. statistics agency search) My guess is that I'm the only one :P - my grandpa also had that combo, but he died 10 years ago now.. :). Man the first time I ever heard my own name used (my grandpa was always just grandpa for everyone) and it was not meant for me - that was a pretty funny feeling! And it wasn't before I was 18 years old :). Was in a wedding party with a guy who shared my name last saturday, and I knew him, but my wife and a lot of my friends didn't hehe, that was funny, coz they always got startled when they heard the name being used around there, and it wasn't meant for me - the same feeling I got the first time I met this name bro :P. almost eerie feeling. Well, enough about my name... :D.
  7. Hey again. I'm just putting out the fire here - nobody meant to be a prick - including you :). I'm sure Nils made this comment with a friendly smile around his face, not keyboard commando mode :). We are all really friendly here 99% of the time, and believe me, this situation is not one of those who qualify for angry thoughts and comments :). I did never take this personal, and it is not neccesary to appologize to me, I'm sorry if the comments came across as hostile - they were meant more as a ironic / self-ironic friendly funny thing. Nothing more :). Let us all just interpret this thing as the ting it actually was - a funny comment. And I'm sure this is just Nils' way of welcoming you :D hehe. One gotta pass the sarcastic-nils-test hehe. Most of us is nice friendly guys :). You are welcome to compete, and it will be fun having you around! :)
  8. Yo rosch, the switchable port front / back is a neat idea... How is it doable in real life is a bit more complicated. There are 5 wires that need to be switched, no? It would be a really cool feature. Could it be done electronically? It would be cool to have one pushbutton that says "switch" or similar. I haven't studied electonic switching techniques, so I have no idea myself how to solve it - yet :D. It could easily be achieved with some small signal relays. In either case I can smack up a Eagle PCB layout designed in a way that it can easily be etched at home, or ordered if that is an option. Or is there simply a switch (affordable and available) that can do the same thing mechanically? I'll do some research on this myself, but please comment if u have a bright idea! :). My suggestions on the other things are that design should be for both front and back. A drillguide would of course be useful, but it would be nice with some letters and numbers on the back too :). We just gotta watch out so that it doesn't get too expensive for people to buy afterwards -> that would kinda go against the whole idea about the compo! :). I'll be back later today and upgrade the first post, now that we seem to be close to an understanding about the guidelines :).
  9. Dude, I know - I wrote this in the middle of the night :) And I insured myself against nitpickers :P (that was a joke) Next u try to write this in Norwegian :P (that was another joke)
  10. Yo! I'd like to introduce this thing. If you are one of the many who have been following the GM5 bulk order thread, chances are u picked up this. Well, here's the compo thread! What is this? Some background info (qouting myself here): So! Prize for the winner is 2x GM5x5x5 PCB including chips! Another quote from rosch: Another from rosch It actually looks like the prize now is the following: 2x GM5x5x5 PCB 2x GM5 Chips 2x Component kit for the PCB - excluding the MIDI connectors and everything that isn't to be mounted on the PCBs. This is a really nice prize for the winner! Design guidelines is discussed, and if u have input on this, please leave a comment. I will not post any official guidelines now, but update this thread when it's finalized. The way it looks now is that the whole community will decide the winner out of a few finalists by voting. My hope for this is that many people will learn a lot in the process, and that it will be fun! I also take it for granted that the design will be released for the community to use afterwards. Anyway! This was supposed to act as a teaser - I will come back later and tidy up this entry :P.
  11. OK. Seems that it's kinda settled that the compo is to be about the 19" case. Cool. To conclude then: I'll set up the thread, but there's gonna have to be some guidelines for the design then, and my proposition is the following: 1. One MIDI in / out on the front 2. 8 MIDI I/O on the back 3. USB on the back 4. Option on back for external powering (something like this: mouser.com part number 502-S761KS12) I use these and they are VERY sturdy!) 5. USB Hub inside (does this work?) Meaning only one USB connector on the back 6. LEDs on front for MIDI I/O 7. PowerLED on front (neccesary?) 8. MIDI plugs should be panel mounted so that we don't have to design and produce another breakout pcb to put the connectors on. I will use the winning design myself for my own interfaces :). Obviously I won't be competing myself. Also, the USB connectors in the post above looks nice, but it should really come from a reliable and consitent source, which ebay tend not to be. I myself would be really comfortable with those nice Neutrik USB connectors (mounts in same space as a XLR panel mount. If there's any comments, please add em.
  12. Dudes, I kinda like this idea. I'm not quite sure though that it will easy enough for community to jugde, as there aint so many alternatives for design... you know what I mean? Or am I not seeing something? If it was to be fair, it should be judged by the community, and not single person like me anyway. I guess it should be decided with a poll or something, say, between the top ten or top 5 or something?
  13. Hehe, I read the sentence and saw it was wrong, but then I didn't bother doing anything about it becasue I kinda thought people would know what I was trying to say :P
  14. I'll just throw in my comment too: @ T.K: Awesome that u came through on this one also! If u have (after the party is over) extra mini PCBs u can't get rid of, I'll definetly take a couple of your hands. (but more important that "fresh" gm5 users get em if needed! @ Jojjelito: Good job "lobbying" this through so fast :) @ Nils - yeah I definetly think there's room for another order of your PCBs - they are great and except from the gm5 itself, everyone with a soldering iron can with ease build this! Awesome! And -> I have ordered 6 chips and 4 nils-boards - If I keep em all to myself I have 6 boards and 8 chips in total. I really don't need that many I/Os :). I signed up for those numbers becasue I wanted to make this happen, not just for me, but for everyone else. Let's just put it this way - I will never have the use for 30 midi I/Os myself. To make it interesting (if the admins will let me and don't think it's a stupid idea - please tell me so in that case): Background is that I got a very good deal on my first two gm5x5x5 boards myself back when I bought em. Since I have now signed up for more than I needed, I will be responsible and share around myself as I ones was "shared with". MIDIBox community is "gold" and a lot of people have fun here, and learn a lot of stuff - I have learnt a lot myself -> I would like to "invest" something back in the community. What I would like is to set up a competition of some kind where the price is 2x GM5x5x5 PCB including the chip. Maybe one winner or two, don't know yet :). Have no idea what kinda compo either yet. Let's be clear. My proposal aint to gain cred, fame, friends, nothing like that. It's just a funny way of "investing" in the people of this community - ultimately providing a platform for people to learn more about midibox and electronics. The only catch is that I need the winner(s) to pay for the shipping, but that should be affordable for about anyone I gather... I'm no richie rich, just a normal person with family and too many midi interfaces hehe, so I thought it would be funny to stir it up a little bit with this thing ;). T.K. (or anyone else) if u think this is out of line, please just tell me, and I'll put it to sleep at once hehe, but I thought it would be fun to do so! :) I know there's no history of give-away competition on midibox forum, so my appologies for not asking admins privatly before posting this.
  15. Hehe, that's ok. what you really need to do is to read up on all the ucapps.de modules. That way you will get a better understanding on what the modules can be used for etc. Also read all the info @ midibox-shop.com as there is some info on alternative uses / setups of some modules that u might find interesting. For controlling filter circuits from the SID, u need the analog output module. That module communicates with the firmware on the Core module in order to control the filter CV. That means, very simplistic explained - u replace the potmeters u got on the filter with electronic control. As I am not into programming mios too much yet I don't know about the switches, and I don't have a SID with filters myself either, so I don't know the details - but since u ask about how this all connects i can tell u a couple of things as a summary: potmeters is replaced by signal voltage from AOUT module U can make the SID function as the rotary switch also if u implement it in the application (I don't know what's in there already..) This is done with a DOUT module and relays - here is where the additional info at smashtv's shop illustrate it very good. But the only way is really to read up on the modules if u want to learn how this works. Midibox can do a whole lot of things, and also non musical things it was never intended for - it's all in the firmware - much like a PLC - u input a signal and the brain processes it in it's program and send out another signal. Basically :P.
  16. Thurston is the man yeah! :). Man... I need to form a band named Thurston - awesome! Well - nao, if the order is happening, I know a few people who will get a bit excited, or what u say J? :). edit. btw, u guys know what thurs is? It's some kind of north germanic mythological giant. Thinking of the meaning of thurston <- that army would be unstoppable :P
  17. Checking status on Dell shipment today, looks like it has arrived already in Oslo, which means I will have it in three days or so! Nice!

Now when that's settled, count me in. No fund raising from my side though, after all, we're in it for the free stuff :P

The campaign is about leading by example, not fundraising :P

  18. Haven't touched my iron (no! my SOLDERING iron) in weeks. Finally I felt the urge to do something, but it's outside in my car, and I'm too lazy to go get it :P

I know the feeling. Some things are not immediately in front of you, thus they don't get done.

  19. yo, i have forgotten about this thread, but I promised an update after talking to seppoman. Design has been tested in private closed trials, and works great. But there is not gonna be a public release of the files, simple reason is that there is too many people outside this forum copying and reselling that stuff, and either me or anyone else want that to happen. However, there is a chance that a new design - a slightly different approach - based around 2 ssm2044 that will become available for u guys to buy, but timeframe is not set yet. anyway, that's the status from my side on my reproduction of seppos exelent and hard work :).
  20. First of all, gotta say - sorry - no pictures, my crappy htc phone is at repair, and I have no card reader for that tiny mem card in the computer, so pictures gotta come later on, I have em, but phone crashed before I could load them onto the computer :).. This saturday i have been working a lot on the model. A heavy dose of "bondo" to fix some mistakes I made while sanding the release-edge on it. To make sure all the surfaces was even (it's hard to feel every tiny uneven bump in the wood / bondo with the fingers - even hard to look for them), I sprayed it with a extremely light coat of red paint and started sanding it with 240 grit and a very even sanding block. this way I can sand the tops off there, and the "valleys" are left red colored :). Then I can sand more if it's not much or I can fill in some more with bondo. I did both methods on the box depending on how serious it was. Smart trick I learnt from an auto painter I know. After sanding the entire box, making sure every little error was corrected, i resprayed it with the same red color, now two heavy coats. That is how far I got this saturday. Now i am going to sand it first with 240 grit to remove the "orange-skin" which is hard to avoid using cheap spraycans and a non-controlled enviorment :P. Surface will then become all flat and smooth. Then I am gonna wet sand it with 800 grit to make it even smoother. Then I hit it with the car-wax. If that's not enough to make it shine, I'll give it a round with my angled polisher. When that is done, the surface should be very pianofinish-like. The paint is really just to seal off the wood, so that release wax will do it's job properly. but since I'm using gelcoat as part of the finish on the box when I cast it, it doesn't hurt if the surface is as perfect as it can be on the model - polishing it like this aint really nessecary if u don't care that much for that job :P. But it will probably mean more work later on anyway... So if my guess is right, I'm done with the model this week, then I head to the plastic workshop to get some epoxy around it. If I get hold of the right kinda gelcoat within this week, I actually might be able to start to make the real case this weekend. well... that would be sunday - saturday I'm playing in a wedding :P. Now time for a nap after work / dinner :) have fun!
  21. Ordered new laptop. XPS wasn't sold anymore, so I found a new alternative. Inspiron something something special edition something. Promising. And u know what - I didn't pay ANYTHING for it! :D

Yes, there is actually... It's two steps. Step one: Get lots of money from a guy who u barely met, step two: Go to webshop of ur taste and order the laptop. ;). that's the short version :).

Can you elaborate on how step one was done? :D

      technobreath

Hehe. Yes I can, but I'm not sure it fits the profile of this site, so u got to ask me privately, and then maybe if I know u well enough, u can haz the entire story :P. lol

  22. yo kristal= You should really create a new thread for the next bulk order when u put up the wiki page. This one is getting a bit old and messy :)
  23. Have been spending too much time actually composing music lately, no time to turn on the iron. The rest of the week my music gear is sitting at a stage somewhere waiting for the gig friday night, maybe I should seize the day? :D

very cool! can recommend the purchase of a standalone sd audio recorder for gig recording, they are getting cheaper every day and are more reliable than crashy laptop sounddrivers :)

Yups! Get a dedicated audio recorder or a Nagra if you want to flash.

hehe, yes, computer interfaces has it's glitches and pops, no doubt about that! We might have to look into something like that later on. We have had a playing break for a long time while people build houses and raise babies :P. Now we're almost back, with a couple of new members. So it's still rusty - like in dirt brown colored rust! :P

    Handy hinge

Hehe hawk! Please turn it around so we can see the security code too :D. mmmmmmmmmmmm. moar midiboxes for technobreath - free even :D
  25. OK... I bought 30 knobs from Kristal=. All in all, he did a good job with this. And very fast ;).
