Good job no doubt about that :). Did u build the case yourself? i can't decide if it's alu or steel... ;) btw, long time no dusting? :P
  2. Dudes, wicked1. For me this is not a big deal but as thomas basically told me: <- not OK at all unless himself comes by and says it is ok to share it. <- that was not what we agreed on when u received the files. Look, I'm not trying to be cheap or bitey, and I get that you made the traces wider and pads bigger, but if I udnerstand it coreectly, this is mostly based on the files I sent you, meant for a more private setting than this forum, and the way I see it, the files are not either my or yours to share (except for within the terms given by thomas). So unless you changed the design (which it seems like u didn't "It's basically his board w/ larger traces and pads for easy etching.") we should still keep this private. Basically and short story - This is no big deal for me, and I am not pissed or anything, but it is very important for me to honor Thomas' wishes about this. Remember I told u that if u were to get the files from me, that I didn't want this to come back bite my ass later on - offering the files like this potentially does that, puts me in a bad position towards Thomas. Me and Tim are in the process of designing a new filterboard for his shop, <- a bit different approach than Thomas' designs. And I for sure do not want to appear like I have done something that Thomas told me not to do (assist in the sharing of the files for example) etc. The reason for not sharing aint profit or anything, but clearly not to see the design cloned and sold on ebay or dealextreme. Both the seoppoman board, and this new upcomming little secret.
  3. Nice to see pics :). the sid is soldered to the mainboard? That was never the case with my C64s...
  4. The focusrite interface is lying safely in my car. I don't know if I dare bring it inside when wife looks. Next she'll start asking questions about money and shit like that.... :D

yeah, borrowing ftw :) a friend just "borrowed" a quadcopter, otherwise he could not justify it and his girlfriend, who desperately wants to go to australia for holidays would have kicked his better parts :)

Hehe, I went out after she went to bed, took it upstairs to the studio and unboxed it, and hid it in plain view on the desk :) She has no idea what gear I have anyway, but a new box comming inside from my car - that she would see through :P. Next I'm gonna borrow myself the new laptop :P

suddenly the screen locked up, and I pulled the battery, now the screen is black... Well well. no big deal when I got a couple of hours thinking :P. Today I got a rent phone for free while I send mine @ repair. Good to service it now and then :P.

  6. Oh yes indeed :P. I bought 50 last time, not enough at all :). It will all depend on the price, but I will go in with at least 50 more next order, if price is right I will close in on your numbers indeed, orange_hand
  7. i just wanna step in here myself and do the welcome greeting :D. You will find this place a very nice place to learn about this stuff that you ask for. You say that you want a maybe 24ch daw controller. You should really look into midiboxLC instead of 64, as this emulate Logic / Mackie control surface stuff. it's fairly old project, and I'm not exactly sure if the new version is out yet in it's complete form, but it will be. Newer brains = more possibilities. Just read around and see what you can find out <- ucapps.de is definetly the place to start reading. Combine it with midibox wiki where a lot of detailed info especially about the user projects can be found. And though DIY is really funny, I can also sign my name under that statement, that it aint dirt cheap. it can be cheaper than commercial, but it may also end up more expensive. The big advantage is that u can spread costs out over a long period of time - and that way on a tight-ish budget. Just depends on how u wanna do it ;). A last word on that 24ch controller. of course it all depends on how complicated u want it, and how many controls u want on it, but any way you look at this, it is gonna be a pretty big project. :) - so u for you own good hehe i just urge you yet again to not fall into the trap thinking that it's gonna be cheap and easy. But it can absolutely be done if you want it. I don't try to talk you out of anything here ;) - just giving you a heads up - many people jump into something that ends up too big for em, and it distroys the motivation. But if you want it, and you feel u are up to building it, go ahead do it <- you will find a lot of incredibly talented people here that go out of their way to help you solve the problems :)
  8. Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on it's way. Now only a new laptop is missing to make my gig-rig useable again. Finally decided on dell xps 17, which digs deep in the pocket, but will be worth it Im sure!

Wow, didn't realize you could get touch in that size! That's why I use the 12" screen... It's got the wacom pressure sensitive pen and touch. (it's not dedicated to music.. just my general laptop) I think it's silly to purchase a computer w/out touch, these days.

I remember having 5-6 broken joysticks for my C64 (always 2 working, though :) )

  10. Hi. This is a great page with lots of good info on simple mixing circuits. If you read all this a couple of times you will understand pretty good how to build simple mixers! http://www.all-electric.com/schematic/simp_mix.htm
  11. Hi tomarcus, Welcome and glad to hear that your synth is kicking. I must admit I am a bit curious to where you got hold of a Sammich SID that was assembled with the wrong ICs.
  12. Visited a retired plastic / model worker (guru!) today to get some real advice regarding my custom case build. Was really cool and helpful old guy! See my blog entry for the story :)

      Termoplastic or fiberglass?

    3. technobreath

      technobreath

fiberglass :). Gelcoated that is. CS is special, it's gonna be coated with hexcel texalium cloth (which looks like blue carbon fiber cloth) covered by epoxy.

thanks for the documentation, will be also interesting for model plane builders :)

  13. YES! Finally an update on my StereoSID build - the reason why I started the blog anyway. As many of you know I have an ongoing project - the mb6582 - too, but this stereoSID project I am doing at least 50% becasue of the learning value of it - not electronics, but the rest. To make a long story short - my late grandpa was working almost all his career as the head of the model workshop (they made all kinds of things mainly cast iron stuff for the industry). When my grandpa retired, another younger guy filled his position, and did so for almost 30 years until he started his own workshop, which his son has now taken over when he retired. OK no short story, but it really is :P. This guy knows what there is to know about model making. Today I visited him in his former workshop (now his son's) to ask him bunch of questions on how to turn my wooden model into a neat fiberglass box for the synth. So I gotta brag a little bit by myself too. This guy was really impressed by the model. couldn't understand that I with no real experience in model making had actually made this model just like that. He said I probably had some of those carpenter genes from my grandpa :P. He told me to do some minor changes to the model - u can't even see the changes if u don't know they are there - to allow the fiberglass to release from the model. The changes was to sand down the edges on both sides of the release-line (where the cast is gonna be split apart when I get that far) about 1 degree - so no real changes. You can feel it when u drag the fingers across the release line, but nothing more. So what I learnt from the visit: First of all I need to fix some minor stuff - I sanded a bit too much a couple of places, so I need to fix that. Then I am to paint it with some kind of laquer - clear coat or something - just something to seal the wood with. Then - again the short version, there will be pics later on - I gotta wax it with a release wax a couple of times and polish it - much like waxing your car. Then I'm building a plywood frame around the model to pour half the model - to cast a "negative" of it using epoxy. Then pour the other half. That way I have an epoxy negative cast of the case, which allows me to paint the insides of it with gelcoat and fiberglass, then out comes a nice, neat, box from outer space. And I can do everything together with him in the workshop. Bonus. So - I obviously know a thing or two about model making already, but not what materials to use, where to get it locally, and the small tricks and details that makes this simple without all the beginner misstakes. So as you see, this case project is really more about me learning how to turn complex models drawn on CAD to the finished product, all by hand - I find this extremely fun. I have probably used close to 100 hours in total on the design and model making until now, and I figure I'll use a 100 more for the rest - at least time on the first box. Since I'm making a negative with poured epoxy, I will be able to produce many more from the same model. MMmmm. So in theory I can sell this thing, but in reality I fear that making one offs by hand will take too long for anyone willing to actually pay what it will cost for a finished product :P. Anyway - much text, no photos - no worries - here is the one photo I managed to shoot today.

very nice build. Your stuff oozes of quality antix! Now pleease don't post more nice pictures, u make me feel bad about mine just sitting there for a year now half finished :D.
  15. Sure it is, no doubt about it - just another patch :). I'm just saying, it's a pretty crude and simple way to burn off a little heat outside the vreg if it's too hot already. But I would definetly stick to doing it the right way myself. Proper voltages / proper heatsinks. I'm just agreeing there are alternatives if a rebuild / new transformer isn't sounding as nice as a power resistor. :P
  16. Yep u are right, I didn't think of the resistors to step down the voltage. I have seen some psu designs use this method.
  17. Hehe hawk I haven't realized before now that there was one, but now that u say it :P. I have always been part of the linear camp myself. But switchers is probably the future I guess, but 54khz I also expect to be a bit too low. It's like this - there's no magic, only math (in which I suck btw) but it's like shuriken lays it out: VAC * 1.4 - 1.4 = Rectified voltage. Also the 7809 has a pretty good input range up to 35VDC; so the vreg is fully capapble of handling the drop from the 18-20vdc to 9v. BUT a large heatsink is required - I don't know by hand how to calculate the size, but the vreg can't operate in higher temps than 125 C. Then again, it might be easier, less bulky, less work to just use a second transformer for that :P
  18. Dude, if someone is up for the task, there is an "ongoing" thread about the "waldorf" knobs. I can't organize a bulk since I'm not in EU, and it doesn't make sense at all to have to include the extra costs (all the customs fees and so on) - shipping from germany to norway, and then mostly back again would add too much to the cost. Don't know what I have written there in that thread before, but I have a standing offer when a bulk happens - I'm in for 50-60 knobs when the time comes :).
  19. Just to clarify - the resistor goes in series with the backlight - it's kinda obvious, but since u said u were a total noob on electronics, I guess there's no harm in saying it, no? :).
  20. Yeah, shuriken is right. Using 12v secondaries for 12VDC isn't leaving much room for shit to happen. I didn't catch how much capacitance u got before the regulator. Adding more can help a little, but it's more like patching up a thing that really needs stitches. A couple of things to keep in mind when adding to the cap value before the regulator. Inrush current will increase. Either you tame it (can be done in a pretty crude way using a ntc thermistor) or you make sure that the rectifier circuit and the transformer will handle it in the long run. Please be aware that this is based on my theoretical knowledge. I used to tinker around with simulations on linear supplies, and that is basically where this statement comes from - it could be wrong - or irrelevant.
  21. Dude, a day without the forum today made me look towards midibox blog, and I discovered this! W O W !!!!! Very catchy tune - james bond-ish - Iike it a lot! Having a lot of my musical background from brassbands, I appreciate this a lot. You really nailed it with this tune - combining the blowers with electronic music. Reminds me of film music. And the visual show was also great! :). Have fun doing this - look forward to seeing more :).

  23. I knew you knew it :) - but I just wanted to clarify it. Believe it or not, there are many people in here that do not know natively what voltages goes to what SID, so that is the only reason why I said anything - becasue it does not go without saying for many people like it is for you and me :). And you actually need to put in the right kind of vreg on the PCB in order not to kill it. Hehe, this aint a pissing contest - I just wanted to clarify all the facts for all the people who reads it. I know u know how this works, but that aint the reason you write anything here? It's because you want to help others who might not know, and then it is just a little bit dangerous to assume that they know all the things you take for granted. So please, no hard feelings at all, I am now / wasn't in the last post after you ;).
