  1. Awesome!!! That's slick man... now you need to take a good break and do an album...at least a few singles eh? Can this sequencer record notes played from a keyboard, or is it step entry only? awesome work, as always an inspiration!
  2. I've had my eye on the red blck negative one for some time now!I just bought 5 2x20's on ebay for a total(shipping and all) of less than $10 ea., brand new. DCI Incorporated DC1202A's. I'll be using them for now. The guy had more too, keep'em scoped out if you need some.they are charecter lcds using a hd44780 compatible ks0070b driver.
  3. Yes, but iI can still have the real thing! (though i do see your point). I wonder why no one does "Re-Issues" of theese impossible to find chips...not only SID's but the old curtis and ssm chips used in so many vintage synths? I guess the demand is not there? It would involve a lot of expensive equiptment.....

  5. Yeah, I thought the filter on the 6581 a little weak, so the 8580 is better, good. though i am having fun with my 6581. I would be having fun with my 6581's, but one of them seems to have a bad filter, it does absolutely nothing... strangely this came from a mint 64.the one that works came from a broken 64...aint that luck ?? Still I do love this little SID, got some sick sounds already, and it is definitely Vintage! Just got me a box of parts for the cs today.....for now i am doing something between the minimal and full cs....anyway i digress....

The filter is one difference. the supply voltage is another. 12V for 6581, 9V for 8580. the 8580 was the last version made, and is reported to sound better than the 6581, Though I have not yet got my 8580's to do any testing. I think that's about it ... surely there are internal differences that lead to the better sound, but i don't know the details...

  10. They made the sidstation, and they can'y do a decent emulation? Well it's always been my opinion, why Emulate, if you can have the real thing?

I have been having good luck scavenging ones out of computers. i even made a 2x4 one for connecting core and sid by simply cutting a larger one and wrapping it with some electrical tape to keep it together.(they don't seem to make that exact  connector in a size smaller than 2x5) Kinda ghetto i guess, but it works, and i can disconnect my modules, and it was free!!
  12. as far as i know, i seem to remember reading it anyway, eagle lite can view and print any size file. Jack, lets see the .brd!! maybe you have saved us all some work!( in which case i send a big thanks!)
  13. I too have been thinking this over, but you can't do it in eagle lite, it would exceed the possible size. I don't support software piracy, and would recomend that no one else should either, it is theft. at least don't talk about it on an open forum. you do know you can get a non profit liscense for eagle, right? it's not free, and may not be your definition of cheap either( heck, i can't afford it right now either), but i guess it's a fair price. I agree that a core sid board would be a more useful idea, maybe not better. Doing it this way anyone who wanted to make a sid could use the board, wether you want 1 sid or the full 4 or 2 or 3. You could do 2 variants, one for the master, and one for theslaves, which would really be the same as the master , minus some parts, so it wouldn't be much more work. parts you could leave of on the slave include, all unused connections(din's dout's ain's aout's, lcd, bankstick...), the stuff for the lcd backlighting,and whatever parts of the powersupply you can leave out( this would be dependant on needing the optimized ps solution). probably other things too, but it is early here (for me atleast).... if someone does this before me, i'd be glad to proof the design as best i can.

  16. In that case, well... does the regulator get really hot? not real sure, other than it says on the core page 7-10 volts.Perhaps if you ran it through a 7809 first? Probably better to just get a wall wart in the 7-10 volt range. I buy'em up cheap at flea markets and thrift stores....you never seem to have enough.keep one in the studio and one in the gig box!
  17. Congrats! I got my sid working last night.Just one core and sid, no lcd or anything yet. I'll put up some pics when i get a little farther.this one will have the two 6581's i got, the minimal control surface, plus a couple of the more important controls. later i plan to build a rack mount quad 8580 with full CS, and a second like yours just a rack( i will load patches made on the full cs). Anyway, congrats!Looks good!
  18. I belive this is normal, if you are measuring the output of the wall wart with no load.Every one i have does the same. you could measure the voltage across the input terminals of the core (so it would have a load).

  20. ok, i got a sid working tonite, sounds awesome! at the moment i have no screen, and no controls, so i want to use jsynth... but i cant find the sid driver. its there, but does not show up in the add menu....all other synths do though. is this normal? I tried to load the patches without the driver and it just locks up??? maybe i am doing something stupid? i am using windows xp, and the latest jre from suns website...... any help appreciated. i really want to spend the night making sid sounds!
  21. ok, so you could use the remaining inputs on the second core for the stops.
  22. that's right, except you want the MIDI IO 128, not the midibox 64. this will give you up to 128 inputs, you need one for each key. If you do not have more than 128 keys you only need 1 core., set it up as scuzzle described to get the different midi channels.I'm not sure how many keys you have, but if you have a dual manual and a pedal board, you may need 2 cores. This would allow for up 256 keys.(or whatever...)
  23. You can use a sharpie.... but i wouldn't try it on theese designs. IC pins need to be perfectly aligned. I had minimal succes with the above methods, though it got better everytime, i think it takes a lot of practice. I read somewhere recently about sending the board and toner transfer paper through a laminator instead of using an iron, supposed to be more even pressure. Apparently there are laminators made specifically for this purpose. i may try one day, with a cheap laminator, but i'm not shelling out a bunch of money.( if it doesnt work well, i can always have luggage tags...)
  24. yeah, thats a cnc. CNC Standsfor "Computer Numeric Control". it works like a standard milling machine, but uses stepper motors under computer controll to position the workpiece.Really good ones (expensive) can automatically switch tools and other crazy stuff!
